An example of work by my friend Malcolm who's just returned to England for a year's study after living in Canada for about 30 years. We were at secondary (high) school together and became friends in our early teens. We shared similar tastes in music and even played in a progressive rock band for a short time. Had a natural talent for drawing and painting that I always envied, as I have no artistic talent whatsover.
When we left school, we lost touch for several years. I got a job and he went travelling. He was working in hotels on the south coast (casual work, washing pots and such) when he met the Canadian girl who was later to become his wife. He thought he'd never make a living as an artist in England, but his girlfriend said there was a thriving arts and crafts market in Canada, so they got married so he could work there. He started selling silk screen prints at craft fairs, then realised there was more money to be made organising the events. After a while he lost interest in that and got some work teaching art in colleges, and doing corporate design work.
I managed to trace him several years after he left England by writing to his sister, care of his parents address here in Manchester. The reply I got was from Belize, where she was stationed in the air force, and she gave me his address in Canada. I wrote him (this was still before the invention of the internet) and we started a correspondence that lasted several years, and he even came over to visit a couple of times. Somehow we lost touch again when he moved again, but I managed to catch up with him again over the internet and we've managed to stay in touch since then. Now in his 50's he's back in England and studying art again so maybe this will lead to a new phase in his career.
