>One task I have been assigned is managing the vacancies in my division, drawing up job descriptions for new posts and arranging interviews for candidates. The irony of this is not lost on me.

actually, i'd put that right up in the "Surreal" bracket

and yeah, stay the hell IN employment. no matter what. a casual glance over my own blog history will scare the shit out of you re stepping outside the standard pigeonholes then trying to get back in.

so grab that current temp mgr replacement opportunity with both hands, and do whatever they THINK constitutes a good job, rather than going with your conscience/professionalism.
i'm working as a headhunter at the moment, by the way. and it has very very much NOT contradicted even my angriest, sourest, most jaundiced and cynical experiences/opinions of the job market, but rather to EMPHASISE THEM IN UNCONTRADICTED LOUD SHOUTINESS.

so the advice above? take it from someone with deep experience and insider knowledge of the process.
Thanks Salti. I've been in the new job for a week now, and it's pretty crazy (of which more later if I'm not in therapy). It's quite a culture shock for me and there are times when I think I can't hack it, but I'm damned if I'm going to be beaten by it.
